In 1999, on the publication of his first book the the Thirty-Six Strategies of Ancient China, Verstappen decided to provide some Black & White illustrations to enliven the look of the book. He decided to emulate the technical pen & ink style of archeological illustrations. Working from museum photos Verstappen drew 18 illustrations seen below.
